This project of six stained glass window designs was undertaken at the request of Dr. Pam Youngblood, professor of Flute at Texas Womens University (TWU) in Denton, Texas. I am a member of this flute choir. In autumn of 2005 she discussed the possibility of performing Sonny Burnette's composition for flute choir titled, "Stained Glass Windows." The music is organized into six movements; each representing unique historic stained glass windows. A slide show of the windows is supposed to be projected while the flute choir plays. We decided to produce six new stained glass window designs, based upon the same six movement titles. I specifically asked to NOT see the slides prior to creating my own designs, so as to not be influenced by them. I based the new designs strictly on the title of the movement and what images the music brought to my mind. On April 10, 2006, the combined TWU and Brookhaven College flute choirs presented "Stained Glass Windows" at a joint concert. This was the first time I saw the "old" windows projects alongside my "new" designs. It is a fascinating study on how music effects design.
One of the designs has been completed as a real stained glass window: "Cockatoos." It is for sale.
